Strawberries: How to Grow and When to Plant in Your Backyard or Patio Garden!

Strawberries are one of our favorite things to grow! The sweetness and flavor in home-grown strawberries simply can't be beaten! They're easy to grow and will come back year after year and continue to spread. Strawberries are one of the few plants that we don't even attempt to grow from seed. It takes up to three years for a plant to produce fruit, so it's generally better to buy transplants from the nursery instead of starting from seed.

How to Grow:

Strawberry plants are typically bought at a nursery since they are very difficult to start from seed. Strawberry plants can be planted 4 per square foot in the full sun. Take care to notice what plants are around the area as well, see the companion plant section below. Strawberry plants will require at least weekly watering with more frequent in hot and dry weather.

Companion planting is a vital part of organic gardening. Companion plants assist in the growth of others by attracting beneficial insects, repelling pests, or providing nutrients, shade, or support. There are also plants that do not like being next to each other. Some plants get too tall and can provide too much shade for your plant. You will typically begin to be able to harvest after 1-2 years. Harvest as the fruit turns color and ripens. Leave a short piece of the stem attached when harvesting.

There’s nothing that tastes quite like a freshly picked, home-grown strawberry! We eat them fresh right from the garden and add them to salads, smoothies, and any other recipe calling for strawberries. They can also be frozen or made into jams or jellies for preservation.

  1. Transplant the seedlings to larger containers when they are about 2 inches tall or have grown 4-5 leaves. Start fertilizing around this same time with an organic fertilizer that has nitrogen as its first ingredient so it can build up strength for blooming later on in the season. Be sure not to overfeed them because too much nitrogen will inhibit flowering! Keep watering until nighttime temperatures stay above 55 degrees Fahrenheit consistently through November; remember also to water during dry spells of rainfall less than 1 inch per week since wetter soil produces better berries than drier soil does
