How to Grow:

Cabbage can be planted indoors as early as 8-10 weeks before your last spring frost and 16 weeks before your last spring frost. They can be transplanted 4-6 weeks before your last spring frost and 10 weeks before your first fall frost. You can see specific dates for your location using our FREE iOS, Android, and Universal Web App. Cabbage seeds are planted 1/4 inch deep, 1 per square foot, in the full sun. Take care to notice what plants are around the area as well, see the companion plant section below. Cabbage will sprout in approximately 5-8 days. Provide a heavy amount of water until the head forms, then back off to moderate.

Companion Plants:

Companion planting is a vital part of organic gardening. Companion plants assist in the growth of others by attracting beneficial insects, repelling pests, or providing nutrients, shade, or support. There are also plants that do not like being next to each other. Some plants get too tall and can provide too much shade for your plant. Sometimes certain plants attract the same pests, so it is important to try and separate these

Pests:

Pests can be one of the most difficult challenges you face in the garden. We strive to grow food without the use of pesticide and luckily there are natural solutions for most of these nasty pests! The pests listed below are common ones for cabbage: Learn more about how to manage pests and attract beneficial insects in our FREE iOS, Android, and Universal Web App!

Harvesting:

Cabbage heads will be ready to harvest in approximately 60-90 days. Harvest anytime after heads start to develop and feel firm. Don’t wait too long, though, or they’ll split! Harvest by slicing the entire head off from the base.

Cooking & Eating!

Cabbage can be eaten cooked or raw. We grow cabbage primarily for coleslaw and sauerkraut. You can also add cabbage leaves into stir-fries for a tasty treat!

  1. Cabbage must be scheduled carefully in may garden. They do not like to be planted while summer is still warm and dry, but the last phases need to get an early start because there is not much to the cool season here. I tend to plant only two (or maybe one) phase. However, they grow quite well for most of the year on the coast just a few miles away!
