How to Grow Onions!

Onion blog post
Onions are a fantastic addition to any garden! We use onions in almost all of our meals, usually sauteed with garlic. We also use the green tops to add a little extra flavor to mashed potatoes, soups, eggs, nachos, and much more!

How to Grow:

Onions are planted 8-12 weeks before your last spring frost and 6 weeks before your first fall frost. You can see specific dates for your location using our FREE iOS, Android, and Universal Web App.

Onions are planted 1/2 inch deep, 16 per square foot, in full sun to part shade. Take care to notice what plants are around the area as well, see the companion plant section below. Onions will be ready to harvest within 60-120 days. Provide consistent moisture. Stop watering when the tops fall over.

Companion Plants:

Companion planting is a vital part of organic gardening. Companion plants assist in the growth of others by attracting beneficial insects, repelling pests, or providing nutrients, shade, or support. There are also plants that do not like being next to each other. Some plants get too tall and can provide too much shade for your plant. Sometimes certain plants attract the same pests, so it is important to try and separate these.

Harvesting:

Onions are ready to harvest within 60-120 days. Onion tops should turn brown and fall over when the bulbs are almost ready. Once the tops dry up, harvest the onions and place them on drying racks in a dark, dry place.

Cooking & Eating!

We use onions in almost every meal! A couple of our favorite dishes to add them to are hamburgers and coleslaw, and our salsa just wouldn’t be the same without them!
