Kohlrabi is not only a super healthy vegetable, but it’s also easy to grow! Its unique look will add beauty to your garden as well.

How to Grow:

Kohlrabi is a cool season crop that is planted 4-6 weeks before your last spring frost and 6 weeks before your first fall frost. You can see specific dates for your location using our FREE iOS, Android, and Universal Web App. Kohlrabi seeds are planted 1/2 inch deep, 4 per square foot, in the full sun. Take care to notice what plants are around the area as well, see the companion plant section below. Kohlrabi sprouts between 14-21 days with consistent moisture.

Companion Plants:

Companion planting is a vital part of organic gardening. Companion plants assist in the growth of others by attracting beneficial insects, repelling pests, or providing nutrients, shade, or support. There are also plants that do not like being next to each other. Some plants get too tall and can provide too much shade for your plant. Sometimes certain plants attract the same pests, so it is important to try and separate these.

Pests:

Pests can be one of the most difficult challenges you face in the garden. We strive to grow food without the use of pesticide and luckily there are natural solutions for most of these nasty pests! The pests listed below are common ones for kohlrabi: Learn more about how to manage pests and attract beneficial insects in our FREE iOS, Android, and Universal Web App!

Harvesting:

Kohlrabi is harvested between 40-60 days. The best time to harvest the kohrabi greens is when they are still young and tender. When the bulb is 2-3 inches in diameter you can start harvesting. Harvest leaves by simply cutting them off or the entire stem and bulb by cutting from the base of the plant. Once the kohlrabi bulb is 4-6 inches, you can harvest by cutting them from the base of the plant.

Cooking & Eating!

You can eat the leaves as a spinach substitute raw or cooked. The bulb of the plant can be eaten fresh or cooked or steamed as well. Kohrabi stores well and can be frozen or pickled.
