Celery is known to be one of the most difficult vegetables to grow in your garden. It takes a long time, but the reward will be quite tasty!
Celery is known to be one of the most difficult vegetables to grow in your garden. It takes a long time, but the reward will be quite tasty!

How to Grow:

Celery is planted 8-10 weeks before your last spring frost and 10-12 weeks before your first fall frost. You can see specific dates for your location using our FREE iOS, Android, and Universal Web App. Celery is planted 1/4 inch deep, 1 per square foot, in the part sun. Take care to notice what plants are around the area as well, see the companion plant section below. Celery will sprout between 14-21 days. Keep celery well watered, do not let it dry out.

Companion Plants:

Companion planting is a vital part of organic gardening. Companion plants assist in the growth of others by attracting beneficial insects, repelling pests, or providing nutrients, shade, or support. There are also plants that do not like being next to each other. Some plants get too tall and can provide too much shade for your plant. Sometimes certain plants attract the same pests, so it is important to try and separate these.

Pests:

Pests can be one of the most difficult challenges you face in the garden. We strive to grow food without the use of pesticide and luckily there are natural solutions for most of these nasty pests! The pests listed below are common ones for celery: Learn more about how to manage pests and attract beneficial insects in our FREE iOS, Android, and Universal Web App!

Harvesting:

Celery will be ready to harvest in about 80 days. You can begin to harvest celery when stalks are about 6-8 inches tall. Harvest stalks from the outside in. Leave the inner stalk in place so it can continue and go to seed if desired. Keep harvested celery in a plastic bag in the refrigerator and use within 2 weeks.

Cooking & Eating!

Celery is my favorite eaten raw with some ranch dip or peanut butter! Celery is also a great addition into soups, stews, and stir fries. You can add the leaves of the celery in along with the celery to add more flavor.
