This is a great plant to grow in a container in most areas as you will most likely have to bring it in for the winter if you live in zones 7 or below. You can plant in the ground if you are in zones 8 or above. Turmeric is commonly grown for its amazing health benefits!

How to Grow:

Turmeric can be planted 2-4 weeks after your first spring frost throughout the summer. You can see specific dates for your location using our FREE iOS, Android, and Universal Web App.

Turmeric is planted 1-2 inches into the soil, 1 per square foot, in the full sun to part sun. Take care to notice what plants are around the area as well, see the companion plant section below. Water your turmeric weekly. Make sure that your soil drains well.

Companion Plants:

Companion planting is a vital part of organic gardening. Companion plants assist in the growth of others by attracting beneficial insects, repelling pests, or providing nutrients, shade, or support. There are also plants that do not like being next to each other. Some plants get too tall and can provide too much shade for your plant. Sometimes certain plants attract the same pests, so it is important to try and separate these.

Pests:

Pests can be one of the most difficult challenges you face in the garden. We strive to grow food without the use of pesticide and luckily there are natural solutions for most of these nasty pests! The pests listed below are common ones for ginger:

Harvesting:

Turmeric is ready to harvest within approximately 7-10 months. Harvest your turmeric in the spring or summer of the year following planting. You will notice the leaves begin to turn yellow which will signify that it is ready to harvest. Simply pull the turmeric plant directly from the soil. Break the foliage off from the turmeric root and bring root inside. You can break a small (1-2 inch) section to replant to grow more again if desired.

Cooking & Eating!

Turmeric, like ginger, is known for its spicy root. Most people grow turmeric to make your own turmeric powder for cooking. This can be used in countless recipes such as rice, soups, and eggs! Try adding this delicious root to your stir-fries! You will not be disappointed! Store in the refrigerator for up to 6 months in an airtight container!
