How to Grow:

St John’s Wort can be planted indoors to get a head start on your season 6-8 weeks before your last spring frost. You can transplant outdoors or plant directly by seed after the last spring frost and up until 8 weeks before the first fall frost. You can see specific dates for your location using our FREE iOS, Android, and Universal Web App.

St John’s Wort will be planted 1 per square foot. We like to put them into Smart Pot containers because they can be invasive and grow quite large if not pruned or regularly. St John’s Wort will require full sun to partial shade and consistent watering. Take care to notice what plants are around the area as well, see the companion plant section below.

Companion Plants:

Companion planting is a vital part of organic gardening. Companion plants assist in the growth of others by attracting beneficial insects, repelling pests, or providing nutrients, shade, or support. There are also plants that do not like being next to each other. Some plants get too tall and can provide too much shade for your plant. Sometimes certain plants attract the same pests, so it is important to try and separate these. St John’s Wort makes a fantastic companion plant to virtually all plants!

Harvesting

If planting from seed, you will begin to have blooms to harvest in the second year. If transplanting, you could start harvesting when you get blooms.

When harvesting this plant, use scissors to cut away no more than the top 4-6 inches of the plant. You will know if the flowers are ready to be harvested when you can rub a rub between your fingers and notice a reddish stain.
