How to Grow:

You can start sage indoors 6-8 weeks before your last spring frost or plant outdoors 1-2 weeks before your last spring frost. Sage can also be planted in the fall 8 weeks before your first fall frost. You can see specific dates for your location using our FREE iOS, Android, and Universal Web App.

It is best to plant sage from transplants or propagation because growing from seed can be extremely difficult and very time consuming. If you do chose to plant from seed, plant the seed 1/4 inch deep. Sage will be 1 plant per square foot in the full sun. Take care to notice what plants are around the area as well, see the companion plant section below. Sage seeds will take 14-21 days to sprout. Water weekly.

Companion Plants:

Companion planting is a vital part of organic gardening. Companion plants assist in the growth of others by attracting beneficial insects, repelling pests, or providing nutrients, shade, or support. There are also plants that do not like being next to each other. Some plants get too tall and can provide too much shade for your plant. Sometimes certain plants attract the same pests, so it is important to try and separate these. Herbs are especially great companion plants because they help to repel pests from your other plants!

Harvesting:

Sage will be ready to harvest in approximately 80-90 days after planting. Be careful to not harvest too much during the first year. After it is fully established, it can be harvested 3 times in one season by taking cuttings of stalks.

Cooking & Eating!

Sage can be used either fresh or dried. We recommend flavoring your meat with it to enhance the savory flavors.
