Grapes are one of the most popular fruits to eat but are not commonly grown in many backyards. As beautiful and tasty as they are, grapes should definitely be grown more!

How to Grow:

Grapes are a perennial fruit. They are planted after your last spring frost or 8 weeks before your first fall frost. You can see specific dates for your location using our FREE iOS, Android, and Universal Web App.

Grapes are planted as a transplant at least 10 apart. It helps to trellis the grapes up a vine. They are planted in the full sun. Take care to notice what plants are around the area as well, see the companion plant section below. Grapes will need to be watered weekly.

Companion Plants:

Companion planting is a vital part of organic gardening. Companion plants assist in the growth of others by attracting beneficial insects, repelling pests, or providing nutrients, shade, or support. There are also plants that do not like being next to each other. Some plants get too tall and can provide too much shade for your plant. Sometimes certain plants attract the same pests, so it is important to try and separate these. Herbs are especially great companion plants because they help to repel pests from your other plants!

Harvesting:

Grape plants will begin to produce grapes that you can eat within 2-3 years. Do not let the grapevine grow fruit the first year or two until the root system has become established. Keep pruned back until growing fruit. Once you have grapes on the vine, all you need to do is simply cut bunches of grapes from the vine once they are ripe!

Cooking & Eating!

Simply wash the bunch of grapes and enjoy! Grapes can also be used in various jams and jellies.
