How to Grow:

Rosemary can be planted indoors 8-10 weeks before your last spring frost and transplanted outdoors 2 weeks after your spring frost. You can also plant in the fall 8 weeks before your first fall frost. You can see specific dates for your location using our FREE iOS, Android, and Universal Web App.

Rosemary can be started by seed or propagation. Rosemary is planted 1-2 inches deep, 1 per square foot, in the full sun to part shade. Take care to notice what plants are around the area as well, see the companion plant section below. Rosemary seeds will sprout within 15-25 days. While germinating keep moist then back off to weekly watering.

Companion Plants:

Companion planting is a vital part of organic gardening. Companion plants assist in the growth of others by attracting beneficial insects, repelling pests, or providing nutrients, shade, or support. There are also plants that do not like being next to each other. Some plants get too tall and can provide too much shade for your plant. Sometimes certain plants attract the same pests, so it is important to try and separate these. Herbs are especially great companion plants because they help to repel pests from your other plants!

  1. Rosemary grows whether one wants it to or not! It is a common groundcover for landscape use here. There are also shrubbier types. Some of the best for culinary purposes are sort of between ground cover and shrubby, but they are pretty nonetheless. At my former home, a ground cover form grew across the road. In the garden, we grew two of the culinary types, and I actually thought that the darker blue flowers were prettier than the pretty types!
