These arachnids are terrific predators and can be very helpful in your garden. Try to avoid hurting these creatures as there are only about 4 species of spiders in the United States that can cause serious problems in humans. The venom of most species are not toxic to humans and cause only some inflammation and itching at the site of the bite. Spiders come in many different shapes and sizes. Web building spiders, such as the banana spider and orb weavers, use their webbing to catch insects to eat. They are passive hunters waiting for their prey to come to them. Ground spiders, such as jumping spiders, can be extremely helpful as they go out hunting in your garden for prey.

How to Attract or Encourage:

  • First off, make sure that you do not use any pesticides in your garden! This can harm your beneficials as well as your pests.
  • Spiders like hidden away areas in a damp area. They will especially love wood piles or large shrubs and grasses.
