Mint: How to Grow and When to Plant in Your Backyard or Patio Garden!

Mint is not only easy to care for, but it grows and spreads by itself, coming back year after year. For this reason, it is best to keep mints in their own containers so they do not take over other plants in the garden. Mint has a plethora of flavors, and each of those flavors has its own plethora of uses. Popular varieties of mint include spearmint, peppermint, and chocolate mint.

How to Grow:

Plant mint 2 weeks after your last spring frost up until 8 weeks before your first fall frost. It is easier and faster to propagate or transplant mint rather than start from seed, but you can do either. You can see specific dates for your location using our FREE iOS, Android, and Universal Web App.

Mint seeds will be planted 1/4 inch deep in their own container in the full sun to part shade. Take care to notice what plants are around the area as well, see the companion plant section below. It will take mint seeds approximately 10-15 days to germinate. Make sure to give your mint constant moisture.

Companion Plants:

Companion planting is a vital part of organic gardening. Companion plants assist in the growth of others by attracting beneficial insects, repelling pests, or providing nutrients, shade, or support. There are also plants that do not like being next to each other. Some plants get too tall and can provide too much shade for your plant. Sometimes certain plants attract the same pests, so it is important to try and separate these. Herbs are especially great companion plants because they help to repel pests from your other plants!

Harvesting:

Cooking & Eating!

We use mint in water, tea, and sparingly in salads. We also like to use our mint to make toothpaste, body scrubs, and mint extract for baking!
