Turnips are a terrific vegetable to grow, especially if you have a time constraint or are impatient to begin to get your food! These fast-growing crops are a great addition to any backyard garden or container vegetable garden.

How to Grow:

Turnips are a cool season crop that can be planted 4-6 weeks before your last spring frost and 10 weeks before your first fall frost. You can see specific dates for your location using our FREE iOS, Android, and Universal Web App.

Turnip seeds are planted 1/2 inch deep, 16 per square, in the full sun. Take care to notice what plants are around the area as well, see the companion plant section below. Turnip seeds sprout within 5-10 days with constant moisture.

Companion Plants:

Companion planting is a vital part of organic gardening. Companion plants assist in the growth of others by attracting beneficial insects, repelling pests, or providing nutrients, shade, or support. There are also plants that do not like being next to each other. Some plants get too tall and can provide too much shade for your plant. Sometimes certain plants attract the same pests, so it is important to try and separate these.

Pests:

Pests can be one of the most difficult challenges you face in the garden. We strive to grow food without the use of pesticide and luckily there are natural solutions for most of these nasty pests! The pests listed below are common ones for turnips:

Harvesting:

Most turnips are ready to harvest within 50-60 days. You can begin harvesting the turnip greens early. These leaves will taste the best when they are younger. Early types of turnips can be harvested at 5 weeks, while maincrop types are harvested between 6-10 weeks. You can harvest at any time at any size for the turnip, but the smaller they are, the sweeter and more tender they’ll be.

Cooking & Eating!

Both the turnip itself and the turnip greens are very nutritious. The turnip can be peeled and simply eaten like an apple! We typically eat turnips and greens cooked by sauteing or added into a stir-fry.
