How to Grow & When to Plant Radish in Your Backyard or Container Garden!

Radish blog post
Radishes are a terrific vegetable to grow, especially if you have a time constraint or are impatient to begin to get your food! These fast-growing crops are a great addition to any backyard or container garden.

How to Grow:

Radishes are a cool season crop that are planted 4-6 weeks before your last spring frost and 8 weeks before your first fall frost. You can see specific dates for your location using our FREE iOS, Android, and Universal Web App.

Radish seeds are planted 1/2 inch deep, 16 per square, in the full sun to part shade. Take care to notice what plants are around the area as well, see the companion plant section below. Radishes will sprout in approximately 25-40 days with constant moisture.

Companion Plants:

Companion planting is a vital part of organic gardening. Companion plants assist in the growth of others by attracting beneficial insects, repelling pests, or providing nutrients, shade, or support. There are also plants that do not like being next to each other. Some plants get too tall and can provide too much shade for your plant. Sometimes certain plants attract the same pests, so it is important to try and separate these.

Pests:

Pests can be one of the most difficult challenges you face in the garden. We strive to grow food without the use of pesticide and luckily there are natural solutions for most of these nasty pests! The pests listed below are common pests for radishes:

Harvesting:

Radishes will be ready to harvest in about 25-40 days! You can begin harvesting once the radish becomes the size of a marble. You can use your fingers to feel around in the dirt without pulling it up. The smaller they are, the sweeter they’ll be. When they’re ready, pull up the entire plant and remove the top.

Cooking & Eating!

Radishes can be kept in the refrigerator for up to a week. They can be eaten raw in salads or added to stir-fries, stews, and soups. They are much more versatile than you might expect!
