Growing

Peas are one of our favorite things to grow. They have few pests, are easy to grow, and taste incredibly sweet compared to store bought peas. Peas don't like hot weather so I'm limited to only growing them in the spring and fall in Oklahoma. They also don't like to be transplanted and can easily be started by direct seeding outdoors. Simply place the pea on the ground and push it down an inch or so. They're a vining crop so it's best to plant them along some sort of trellis. I plant mine along the back row of my raised bed and let them grow up a cattle panel trellis I built. Keep it watered for a week and you'll have peas in 60-90 days. They continually produce new peas as long as you keep them harvested and you can freeze them for storage.

Peas come in three types of varieties: garden peas (inedible pod), snow peas (edible pod with small peas), and snap peas (edible pod with full size peas). The Square Foot Gardening book recommends only growing snap peas and that's what I've stuck with.
